The Food Waste Challenge
It is very frightening to hear this but the average family now wastes on average £650 per year on food that is just thrown in the bin. This is the food we buy and plan to eat but we never do. It is often a case of buying too much food and then just not getting around to eating it.
At the same time we are often obsessed with the best before dates that we will throw food away that is still in perfect condition. Food that will cause major stomach upsets should never be kept but what about everything else?
What about the ugly looking carrots that still have a few days of life left in them?
The Cabbage that would make a wonderful Bubble & Squeak with your leftover potatoes?
Or your bread kept aside to be used as breadcrumbs for a future oven bake?
There is just so many opportunities and you should NEVER waste your food. With so many people dying from starvation every where you need to change things for the better and you can.
A good thing about food waste is that you can save a serious amount of money on your weekly shop just by making a few changes:
- Plan your meals before you go shopping and don’t buy food or drink 0n impulse
- Stretch your current weekly shop by a couple of days (by using up your food could you do next weeks shop on a Friday instead of a Thursday)
- Turn your leftovers int0 an evening 0f fun and have a selection of Tapas with your family (we often do this on a Thursday night the night before shopping and it is amazing what my wife comes up with).
If you just follow a few steps to cut down on your food waste you could save yourself enough money off your weekly shop to eat out at least once a week. Many of us are just coming out of a recession so this is a very promising thought.
