Are sweetened fruit drinks really worth it?

This article is a guest post by Erik Armstrong of http://roundtablecloths.org.

I’m sure you must all be as fed up as I am of buying a drink that claims to be juice and on opening it, find out that its some strange colored imposter.

seems to have many different meanings. To me, fruit juice is extracted from real fruit and is both tasty and full of nutrients. To some drinks manufacturers, it seems to mean that a bland tasting liquid can be passed of as juice if its color co-ordinates with its name! Yet still we buy them, under the assumption that as they have some fruit in them they must be healthy.

Keeping warm with a wonderful menu this month

Even though I live in the sunny skies of Portugal we still have really cold winters just like most of the world. It gets warm from around March so we are now at that point when we are sick to death of the cold weather and all we want to do is have a walk by the beach.

However I should be grateful when I look at how bad the weather is in England.

With cold weather though comes a winter menu and I love cooking hot winter food that you can enjoy for hours with your family.

Right now global warming features in the media on a constant basis and we are all asked to make our effort to do something to help our planet. Many years ago if you did want to help you was considered as a new age hippy whilst now it is classed as perfectly normal to want to make an effort.

Bread, chicken and chilled white wine – the perfect match

Since moving to Portugal I have discovered that there is three things that a Portuguese menu simply can’t live without. It is your bread, chicken and chilled white wine. (obviously I find the wine the most appealing especially after a long day!)

Whenever you visit a Portuguese restaurant the white wine tastes beautiful and it is nicely chilled and served to you at the beginning of the meal. At the same time you will be served with fantastic sliced crusty bread which compliments the wine perfectly and it will come out with some butter, sardine pate and locally produced olives.

My favourite food assistant

If there is one thing that I couldn’t live without in the kitchen it would have to be the slow cooker or crockpot as it is better know to my American readers.

When I first came across them I had the typical bloke attitude:

Why on earth would I waste my money on one of these?

Well the truth is we received our very first slow cooker as a present from a customer that purchased from us in our early door to door selling days. They had simply downgraded the size and give us their family sized slow cooker. At first we placed it in the cupboard and forgot about it until the winter months approached us.
